1972 BMW 1602 (LHD)
1972 BMW 1602 – Staying power
BMW, Bayerische Motoren Werke, is a brand that stands for engineering and style, a Germanautomobile and motorcycle manufacturer that has stood the test of time, part of the reason for that is that it continually tests its products in competition around the globe.
BMW style engineering is imbedded in the Arrive Drive BMW 1602 rally car, the same way it was when Achim Warmbold won both the World Championship Austrian Alpine and Poland rallies in 1973 in the similar specification 2002 Tii version.
BMW is still on top today as they are dominant in the FIA Historic Rally Championship with the powerful M3 rally machine.
This Arrive Drive car has been supremely reliable, a testament to BMW quality and the HERO-ERA Arrive & Drive team who maintain this vehicle. It is comfortable, strong and ergonomically friendly with easy to use controls and plenty of space for taller crew members and their luggage – good reasons why it is regularly hired - it has staying power!
Upgraded with a five-speed gearbox and limited slip differential, the rally interior has all the latest kit with safety harnesses and roll cage along with BMW bucket seats. The car was fully built to top rally specification by BMW Park Lane Classic Division to ensure the car was correct, genuine and compliant with BMW’s competition standards. With all our Arrive & Drive cars, the additional specification rally equipment such as a Brantz International 2 Tripmeter helps you compete successfully.
From beginners to experts, the BMW 1602 has been a top choice for rally people to hire. It has competed successfully on endurance and medium length rallies achieving great results. For example, LeJog has an international reputation for being harsh with its almost none stop nature from Land’s End to John O’Groates, and yet this BMW achieved 9th overall in 2017 plus bronze medals for the crew. This is a particularly relevant story as the driver was a journalist and Regularity Rookie, and 2017 was the toughest LeJog to date with ice and snow for the entire four days and nights. The BMW was equal to the conditions and the new driver!

BMW has been particularly prevalent on the podium in European Touring cars becomingalmost serial winners. However, the classic photo that epitomises their efforts, represented by their distinctive ‘M Sport’ colours, is of Hans Stuck in full flight at the Nurburgring in 1973 in the 3.0 litre CSL, later to be known as the Batmobile!
The 1602 (the "2" meaning "2-door") made its debut at the Geneva auto show in March 1966 and was sold until 1975 with the designation being simplified to "1602" in 1971. The 1.6 L M10 engine produces 90 bhp at 5,700 rpm. In 1968, Road & Track the authoritative US car magazine declared that at US $2676 for the 1602 was "a great automobile for the price".
We know from customer feedback across the board on the BMW 1602, that it represents great value for money and mile by mile enjoyment due to its great staying power.
