1971 Alfa Romeo GTV 1750 (RHD)

1971 Alfa Romeo GTV 1750 (RHD)

The draw of the Alfa Romeo 1750 GT Veloce – the favourite!

It’s pretty, it is beautifully proportioned with a great rorty sound track from the engine, as soon as you arestationary, it will attract an audience. No other rally hire car on the HERO-ERA Arrive Drive fleet can create such a pull. Neither is there one that looks so unlike a rally car yet performs so well on all surfaces with the results to match.

The Alfa Romeo maintains its reliability whatever the event, from Classic Marathons and RAC Rally of the Tests to one day HERO Challenges. It is comfortable and easy to drive with exquisite handling which is part of its Italian DNA.

The clover leaf cluster logo which symbolises Alfa Romeo competition, adorns the rear quarter of the national racing Italian red car. That racing heritage goes back to their first racing car produced in 1913, with works carscompeting successfully in many different categories of motorsport. The marque was a force in GP racing with Tazio Nuvolari who later performed miracles pre-war against the might of the German Mercedes and Auto Union teams, to the glorious early World Championship years with Giuseppe Farina and Juan Manual Fangio at the wheel and taking titles in 1950 and 1951.

Sports car racing was a mainstay as Alfa Romeo won on big events such as the Targa Florio with the magnificent Tipo 33 for example, just as their touring cars were pace setters in the sixties with rallying part of the programme. This Alfa Romeo GT Veloce is a close cousin of the GTV which took so many European Touring Car honours in the hands of Andrea de Adamich who joined Ferrari off the back of his incredible drives.

Alfa Romeo have competed both as an F1 constructor and an engine supplier, via works entries usually under the name of Alfa Corse or Autodelta and supported many private entries in rallying.

Jean-Claude Andruet and co-driver Yves Jouanny winning in an Alfa Romeo Alfetta GT Gp2 at the 1975 Rally of San Martino di Castrozza.

In the 1950s, an Alfa Romeo Giulietta won the 1957 Tour de Corse and the 1958 1000 Lakes Rally as well as the Alpine Rally in 1956 and 1958.

Gp 2 Alfa Romeo GTVs were rallied with moderate success in 1975, winning the Elba and Costa Brava rallies overall, as well as winning the Group 2 category in the Tour de Corse. In 1980.

The 1750 GTV replaced the Giulia Sprint GT Veloce and introduced many updates and modifications. Most significantly, the engine capacity was increased to 1779 cc. Peak power from the engine was increased to 120 hpat 5500 rpm. The stroke was lengthened from 82 to 88.5 mm over the 1600 engine, and a reduced rev limit from 7000 rpm to 6000 rpm and a higher ratio final drive was fitted. The result was that, on paper, the car had only slightly improved performance compared to the Giulia Sprint GT Veloce, but on the road it was much more flexible to drive and it was easier to maintain higher average speeds

This most distinctive looking and sounding GTV has to be driven to be appreciated. A true driver's car, the Alfa is best driven on twisting, sinewy passes to appreciate the handling and poise of the vehicle. However, when used on driving tests, the potent 1779cc engine is a delight. One of our more popular vehicles, its reliability and right-hand drive configuration means that it is suitable for all types of events - from endurance to touring, this Alfa Romeo is sure to bring a smile to your face.
